Shift Work Disorder: Symptoms, Causes & What Actually Helps
If you work nights, rotating shifts, or early mornings and you're constantly tired in a way that a "good weekend" doesn't fix, you might be dealing with shift work disorder (SWD) — not just normal tiredness. Research suggests roughly 1 in 5 night-shift workers experience it, and among all shift workers, sleep problems severe enough to be classified as a disorder show up in about a quarter of the workforce.
What SWD actually is
Shift work disorder is a circadian rhythm sleep disorder. Your internal body clock is wired to expect light during the day and darkness at night — cortisol, melatonin, core body temperature, and appetite hormones all run on that schedule. Working against it doesn't just shrink your sleep window; it puts your sleep attempt at the wrong point in your circadian cycle, so even the hours you do sleep are lower quality.
Common symptoms
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep during your main sleep period, even when exhausted
- Excessive sleepiness during work hours, including brief involuntary microsleeps
- Mood changes — irritability, low mood, reduced stress tolerance
- Digestive issues and appetite changes (a very common but under-discussed symptom)
- Reduced concentration and slower reaction time
Who's most at risk
Risk climbs with the number of night shifts per month, shift length, and how irregular the rotation is. Workers on fixed night shifts often adapt better over time than those on rotating schedules, because rotating shifts never let the body clock fully settle. Age is a factor too — circadian flexibility decreases as we get older, which is part of why many veteran shift workers report it getting harder, not easier, over the years.
What actually has evidence behind it
A lot of shift-work advice is generic "sleep hygiene" content that doesn't account for working against your body clock. These interventions specifically target the circadian mismatch:
- Strategic light exposure. Bright light during your "day" (whether that's actual daytime or your night shift) and light avoidance (sunglasses, blackout) during your intended sleep window helps anchor your circadian rhythm to your actual schedule.
- Anchor sleep. Keeping at least part of your sleep window consistent, even on days off, prevents your body clock from resetting back and forth every few days.
- Strategic napping. A short nap (20–30 minutes) before a night shift can offset acute sleepiness without causing the grogginess of a longer nap.
- Caffeine timing. Front-loading caffeine early in a shift and cutting it off well before your intended sleep window protects sleep onset.
- Melatonin, used correctly. Taken at the right time relative to your target sleep window (not just "before bed"), melatonin can help signal sleep onset — timing matters more than dose.
